Effects of Love on a Person

04/26/2021

Today I found an article that reminded me of the movie we viewed in class The New World. This article related to the way that being in love can change a person. I was looking at things of this nature as a result of a break up a close friend of mine is going through. This article from Psychology Today talked about a study they did to find the ways that people change as a result of love. The article found that people often take on identity traits of their desired partner in order to be more appealing to them. This also happened in the film The New World, as both Pocohantas and John Smith took on identities of the other one. In the beginning of the relationship this seemed good for them as they explored the other’s way of life, but in the end it seemed to not be what they both wanted. The study found that people take on both positive and negative identity factors of the other in order to be more suitable for them. Love can change many people in many different ways and lead them to become very different people. This can result in positive or negative changes to a person's identity. Some people can grow together with their significant other to become better together but also on their own. Many people can also experience growth in maturity as well, but it is still important to spend time apart from your lover in order to make sure that it does not result in some sort of downfall. Love is an extremely powerful thing and can result in many changes to a person. It is important to note these changes and find a love that is productive and giving to both parties in the relationship.
